a bit of irony

So I just returned to the blog after a few weeks of absence and realized the striking irony of my last post. Not even 5 hours later some rough weather moved in and we lost all electricity for the next 12 hours. What are the chances!? I mean, seriously? You can't tell me God doesn't have a sense of humor. . .

So in the storm we lost a few HUGE trees in our backyard, and in one was a nest of baby birds that we'd been hearing for the past month or so. When the tree fell they were scattered across the yard and were clearly in shock. They were still to young to fly and all the frantic wing-flapping did no good. All their little feathers were slicked down and sopping wet. We knew they probably wouldn't live thought the night with the storm still coming down and absurd number of cats occupying the our neighborhood, so we built this funny looking, make-shift nest out of potting grass and scooped them up one by one to bring them inside. Their little bodies were shivering, but surprisingly they didn't try to fight out rescue.

We had attempted this sort of "bird rescuing" before and found that baby birds are very high maintenance! So when we decided to let them stretch their wings the next morning, we could not have been happier to find that they could fly. Overnight. Crazy!

Whitney, that is hilarious b/c I read your blog that day and later that night when the electricity went out I was telling Loren, "I think Whitney spoke too soon!" Ha!
