little heros

Welcome to a day in first grade... This just occurred:

Girl: Silently struggling to get her turquoise playdough out of the container.

Boy 1: Silently watches her until it apparently became unbearable and he says "Here, I can do it for you." (He flips the container over, punches the top a few times, shakes it out, and hands it back to the girl who thanks him). Boy 1 is now smiling from ear to ear.

Boy 2: Has been quietly watching all this. He notices that there is a small clump left in the bottom of the container and seizes his opportunity - (without saying a word) he picks up the container, squeezes the heck out of it (while making a lot of intense sounds) until the clump drops out of the container. "There, I got it for you" he says and hands it to the girl.

There are probably a thousand social learning insights in the 2 minutes I just described, but for me it provoked a pretty simple epiphany:
Even little first grade men want to be somebody's hero.
