etching by the dozen

I saw a project on the Martha Stewart website about glass etching and got super excited about this one! I went out to my local Hobby Lobby and bought myself a whole jar (economy sized) of glass etching cream.

*1st tip off that this probably wasn’t the best idea: that one bottle cost more than a lot of post-etched things.

I justified my purchase using the old, cheaper-by-the-dozen theory, and thought there would certainly be at least a dozen glass etching projects in my future. Here’s the play by play:

{This, my friends, it a maple syrup bottle - one of my favorite shapes - I save empty ones as bud vases so I had a few laying around. Oh, and that is a sticky-backed, foam letter.}

{a lot of free-handed, experimental, design cutting}

{decided to go with something simple for my first try... attached with double stick tape around the edges}

{The instructions said to apply generously and wait 5ish minutes. Actually I’m paraphrasing, but those were the general instructions minus the paragraph of warnings about what happens if you eat etching cream or rub it into your eyeball.}

{Pealed off my foam letter, unstuck my paper/tape design, and rinsed the bottle in warm water... a little rough around the edges, literally}

{I used some acrylic - aka my all-purpose fix-it - to neaten up the edges... seemed to help a bit, still, I’m not so sure that I’ll be getting my dozen etching projects in. Overall, it was a bit too tedious for my taste, but how will you know until you try, right...}

PS. WE GET KEYS TO OUR HOUSE (and the blog gets official photos) JUST 2 WEEKS FROM TODAY!!!!!! WOOOHOOOO!!! (can you tell we’re totally pumped?!)
