project: dresser

Fact: merging lives with anther human being means that you end up with a lot of stuff. Some of that stuff is wonderful, like baby pictures, family heirlooms, broken-in tools, etc. Some of that stuff is not so wonderful. Allow me to illustrate my point...

{my apologies to anyone who currently owns this dresser...}

Don’t get me wrong, I am so thankful that we have a dresser and am fully aware that there are some pretty hideous ones out there... However, this puppy is no where close to my style. My thoughts: if it doesn’t have character (aka scratches, chipping, a good story) then I’m not interested. J, on the other hand prefers things a little... let’s go with “fresher" looking. For example, we just laid hardwood floors throughout the house. Well, inevitably the process of moving left it’s mark, quite literally, on our floors with dint or two here and there. My thoughts: It just adds more character to that already gorgeous knotty wood. J’s thoughts: It is now mandatory that we felt the bottom of every object in our home. So you can understand how our thoughts on this dresser may differ a little. Well, before giving it a major overhaul, I had a simple idea to try out on our fresh and clean dresser. It took about a half hour and didn’t cost me a dime :)

Step 1: Rough It Up
{a little sandpaper (and a wood chisel if your really enthusiastic) and you’re good to go!}

Step 2: Warm It Up
{the raw wood tends to look especially light - especially up next to black paint - so I used a scratch cover  (Old English for dark woods to be exact) to make my sanded areas look a little more broken-in}

Step 3: Start Counting
{I used little acrylic (I mixed white and gray) a sponge and a stencil and voila!}

Step 4: Remove Abundant Knobs
{that’s right, all 16 of them}

Step 5: Stare At Your Fabulous, Old-Looking Dresser
